NEWS: SITE ON HOLD FOR A WHILE

I have come to the decision that the site will go on hold for a while, I currently have a few things I need to be focusing my attention on and therefore the site has been neglected as of recently, which is not what I want. I feel that if I do have the site up and running, posting features, then I want to have my full attention on it and not leave it numerous days where I haven’t updated. So therefore, the site will be on hold until further notice. Do not worry, for those who regularly check this site, I will be back posting when the time is right and there will be plenty more features to go on this site, but at the moment I just don’t have what it takes to remain focused on this site.

In the meantime though, I have only just posted a couple of features below, one being an incredible interview with the very talented Jimetta Rose, so be sure to check that out just below. INTERVIEW SPECIAL: JIMETTA ROSE

The time has come for another exclusive interview feature here on Sexy Never Left. Now, Jimetta is an artist I have been following for quite a while now and I absolutely adore her album, ‘The Barber’s Daughter’, which is something that has made it onto my iPod, not an easy feat these days, as I tend to be so fussy with music. So I was truly happy when Jimetta very kindly agreed to be a part of my interview special here on Sexy Never Left.

When were you first exposed to music? Did you know then that this is something you wanted to pursue?

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started singing out the womb according to my mother. My first memory of music that is clear is singing in the Sunbeam Choir at my church, I was around 2 or 3 years old. I have always known that music is what I wanted to do, for a split second when I was 7 or so, I wanted to also be a figure skater due to their lovely costumes, but even then I wanted to be a singing figure skater. *laughs*

Who has been the biggest influence on you, when it comes to your music?

Wow! This one is so hard because inspiration comes from all over the place, but if I had to narrow it down to the 3 most influential inspirations, then I’d say Ella Fitzgerald for her pitch perfect scatting and precision; The Clarke Sisters for their wonderful harmonic arrangements and Chaka Khan and Rufus for their funky soulful vibe. There are of course many other influences but these are the ones that I believe have helped me cultivate my own sound.

What has been the response so far to the music which you’ve released?

So far the response has been far beyond what I expected, especially being an independent artist with no actual experience. It’s been a long rocky road, but each day I am surprised by another sale in another country. I have mailed my CD all over the United States and even have some in London and France, not bad for a girl from South Central Los Angeles.

What do you think the future holds for you as an artist?

All I can type here is what I would like to happen, you know, it’s hard because God always has so much more in store for us than what we can imagine. I believe all things are possible, so I look forward to touching the hearts of people all over the world with my music and my words. These are hectic times that we are living in, so it means so much to me that a song I sing could possibly give people that have run out of hope and are looking for a better way, something more; something to believe in.

Are there any plans for you to tour?

So far those are only in my head, but there have been some negotiations - so let’s keep our fingers crossed.

What influences you when it comes to writing material?

Really I am writing all the time. Some ideas I just let fly with the wind, but those that stick with me become songs or stories. I just absorb all that is around me... swish it around in my head awhile and here comes some melodies. Honestly, it’s a humbling experience because I cannot pinpoint the exact source of a lot of these ideas, but that’s the beautiful part of it as well, you know, co-creating with God - divine energy becoming something you can listen to, hum along to and write down on some paper... simply amazing.

Do you have any plans for a new album?

First on the agenda is the live CD/DVD with my band, ‘The Beautiful Thing’, we’ll be recording that soon. So I am super excited about the new songs and also introducing the world to my band. especially since they are so awesomely talented and have believed in me and my vision since the very beginning. I’m working on the master plan beyond this point but more music is coming soon.

What can we expect from your future projects?

My aim is that you hear the growth from one project to the next, so on future projects from me be prepared to share in wherever this road leads me, who knows we may do a whole album Bossanova (one of my favourite genres of music) or flip it up on y’all and cover the Beatles (can’t afford to do that right now). *laughs* Basically there’s isn’t any cookie cutter image over here, you’re going to see me grow up through this music, each project will be a stepping stone. Walk with me!

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with that kind of an issue?

I have been quite fortunate in respect to writer’s block, but then again I don’t force any song. What I’d say is the best cure for writer’s block is to broaden your musical knowledge, listen to music from all genres that you can, this will widen your idea pool and also help you find different ways to approach a song, whether it be melodic, rhythmic or varying your format.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

I think this is a pivotal point in music. The power is being evenly distributed between the big guys and the little guys by this miraculous thing called the internet, which means the listener is getting more options and which means ‘lil ole me has a chance! I’d say things are beautiful right now, ripe with potential. Can you imagine Top 40 being infiltrated by the underground? Well we’re coming!!

To those who haven’t heard your music, how would you describe your sound?

I think when you mix Jazzy Gospel chords with Hip Hop head nods, some real singing, with that divine energy I spoke of earlier sprinkled throughout – then you’ll get what I’m trying to give you.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the people reading this interview?

Choose love daily... it is like breathing and we must see the oneness which connects us all - these are times for fearlessness. Believe in your wildest dreams! Love y’all!

JILL SCOTT READIES ‘THE LIGHT OF THE SUN’

It’s getting closer to that time when Jill will announce an official date for the release of her upcoming project, ‘The Light Of The Sun’, which I am seriously excited for. I don’t think excited is the word, I’m beyond the excitement, I’m bursting for the day when I will have the album in my hands. So when the album artwork dropped a few days ago, I was in awe, knowing that the day is at last approaching and that Jill has this monster of an album on her hands that we are all so eager to hear. You can take a peep at the artwork for the upcoming project, which is one of two albums from Jill (the other being a compilation of unreleased gems from Jill’s previous label, Hidden Beach).

STACEY KENT’S MAGICAL INTERPRETATION OF A CHILDHOOD CLASSIC

Now this song is currently featured on a British advert for Dreams beds, therefore a whole host of people who weren’t previously familiar (myself included) with this version are being introduced to this rather magical interpretation of a classic song. A song from one of those movies, in this case ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, that everybody has sat through as a child.

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: KYRA SIMONE

Kyra Simone is someone who has been doing her own thing within music for quite some time now and she remains someone who should be heard of on a wider scale, considering how much talent she boasts. So, it was my pleasure when I got the opportunity to interview the very talented lady herself and was able to ask her about how she started in music; who has influenced her on her journey within music and so much more.

When were you first exposed to music?

Did you know then that this is something you wanted to pursue? Even though my parents were musicians, I didn’t have them guiding me as they pursued other careers as I grew up. My dad always said I had talent and I remember singing with ease, but when I got to 16 most of the family said I needed a ‘real’ career. So I did that, I felt unfulfilled and pursued music, learning about the highs and lows from my own experience.

Who has been the biggest influence on you in your life?

My grandmother (Sylviane Leonce), may she R.I.P and she continues to influence me every single day.

What has been the response so far to the music you’ve released?

It’s been amazing. I have noticed though not everyone likes it when you do something that is a little bit different, but then people start to respect you for your diversity.

What do you think the future holds for you as an artist?

I think being an artist is more than just singing, writing and performing... it’s about growing as a person and understanding that it can take you down many roads. I hope to be an inspiration to many people, especially single (women or men) parents, who feel lost or that they’re worthless because they are raising a child or children alone and show them that they too can pursue whatever they dream.

Are there any plans for you to tour your music?

Yes, there are some future plans, but as yet it is to be finalised… so mum’s the word.

What influences you when it comes to writing material?

Life! I suppose that’s everyone’s answer, but mainly my life experiences, although I have looked on and given my perspective on other people’s lives.

Do you have any plans to release your music on a wider scale?

Yes, I do. I have currently teamed up with some wonderful people. It’s kinda quiet right now, but as soon as I can let you know, I shall reveal their names.

What can we expect from your future projects?

The radio show is returning, after a long break, a new album and collaborations with Don-E; Wayne Brown (Virtual Jazz Band); Wayne Marshall; David Mensah; FDOT 1 and Loose Ends Experience. So be sure to keep a look out for that.

If you could collaborate with one artist, who would you like it to be and why?

Oh my goodness, it would so be Prince... he is super talented, unique and very sexy!

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

It’s messed up, I’m tired of watching artists come through in the UK representing Soul and R&B with no acknowledgement for the black Soul artists. This needs to change and can only be done with fair representation and support from all.

To those who haven’t heard your music, how would you describe your sound?

Sophisticated; sensual R&B Soul.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the people reading this interview?

Actions count for a lot, but it starts with word and those words materialise from your thoughts. To understand the power behind this is to feel from a deep place and not to rationalise with logical thoughts.

MARY J. BLIGE'S LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO LOVE

I am a big fan of Mary J. Blige and it’s no secret that I am looking forward to the new album (‘My Life II, The Journey Continues’) from the Queen of Hip Hop/Soul, that’s a given. So when the following video surfaced online, I was there to have a look and listen to the rather amazing first single from the upcoming project.

PRINCE IS GEARING UP TO TAKE OVER L.A.

There are only a handful of artists I would squeal like a bitch for, I named one the other day and Prince would be another. The purple one just oozes that special something that an artist needs to capture the imagination of his fans.

Now with all of that said, Prince is gearing up to take over L.A. with the announcement of a 21 date tour, one that would possibly rival London’s, which he did a few years back. Prince will also be appearing on George Lopez show this coming Wednesday, from what is mentioned in the following clip. Enjoy!

JILL SCOTT OVERLOAD? I THINK NOT!

Is there such a thing as a Jill Scott overload? I honestly don’t think so! In fact, I’m in heaven right now with all of this Jill Scott news, new songs surfacing, release date for a side project and an official album coming this year. This is what I’ve been praying for from one of my favourite artists, if not my favourite, in the music industry.

After ten years with Hidden Beach and leaving them last year, not only has Jill inked a new deal and releasing a new album, but Hidden Beach are also compiling a side project that will be released this year as well. ‘Just Before Dawn: Jill Scott From the Vault, Vol. 1’ will be a CD/DVD package that will feature ten songs and a DVD featuring all of Jill’s past music videos, as well as possible live footage. This, as one will first assume, is not a random collection just thrown together, it apparently has Jill’s stamp of approval and quite rightly so. Jill has always been very precise about work that she puts out to her fans, hence why she has never released a bad project in her career. ‘Lovely Day’, a cover of the Bill Withers classic, is the first song to be taken from the project and is currently being sold on the official Hidden Beach site, with an eleven minute teaser that will hopefully prepare you for this great project.

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: MARK HILL

So the time has come again where yours truly is allowed to interview an artist who has proved to be an influential force within the British music scene, especially at the turn of the millennium, which was wow, eleven years ago now. Time flies by so fast these days! Since then Mark Hill has proved that he has exactly what it takes to provide the British music industry with the music that we are desperately searching to hear, working with the likes of Craig David; Corinne Bailey Rae and so many more established artists within the industry. Mark seems to have a gift at bringing out the very best in artists, so it was a honour when he said yes to me interviewing him on his past musical experiences, what’s going on for him at present and what he has in store for the future.

When were you first exposed to music? Did you know then that this is something you wanted to pursue?

Music has been a big part of my life from some of my earliest memories; my Parents bought me a tin drum kit when I was 4 and my Grandfather Tom had a house full of instruments that he was self taught on, they ranged from a Guitar; a Banjo, Harmonica and an Accordion. I tried almost every instrument in school until I joined a brass band and settled on Drums and Percussion.

You experienced a large amount of success at the turn of the Millennium, how did that make you feel?

It was an amazing feeling, albeit slightly surreal. There was a massive sense of relief, especially as we had really struggled to make a go of running a studio for years and we were massively in debt. It was also slightly bittersweet getting swept up in the music business politics of the time, we were pretty unprepared.

You produced one of my favourite albums from Craig David, did you ever expect ‘Born To Do It’ to be as successful as it was?

Craig and I used to joke about how many millions the songs would sell, I have to admit we knew they were pretty special. The ones that really resonated gave us an amazing feeling when we wrote them, but we had no real idea of the impact they were to have globally.

Do you still have contact with Craig?

A little, the odd email now and again, but not as much as I would like to, our lives took very different paths after ‘Born To Do It’. Also, I never saw eye to eye with his label, which was a strain on our relationship. We’ve talked about writing together again, but saying that, I’m not happy with doing it via email. The best music we wrote was when we were vibing in the studio together.

Will you ever work with Craig again on a new project?

Never say never! I’m open to it, but it would have to be on the right terms creatively, I’d love him to guest on a track for my new project.

You’re still doing your thing within music, what projects do you have lined up for the future?

I’ve made a vow to concentrate on writing music for pleasure now, not business. I’ve realised I’m no good at being a jobbing writer/producer working to a brief, so I’m setting a label to release my own music and collaborations, also developing new artists that emerge through writing and recording sessions.

I adored your project ‘The StiX’ that you did a few years back; will you ever do anything like that again? If so, who would you love to work with?

I’ll definitely do another similar album, I’m also working on a Rock album, there are so many great soulful artists in the UK; both signed and unsigned. I’d love to work with Corinne again and all the other guys from BLNT. As soon as the label is up and running, you can expect to hear all sorts of projects to come out of it.

What music are you really into at present? Are there any artists out there whose music you appreciate?

Spotify is my new best friend and YouTube, I discover new music daily but I’m enjoying Citizen Cope; Deadmau5; Magnetic Man; Ed Sheeran and a lot of underground dance stuff at the moment. I’m also a big fan of John Mayer, as I think his songwriting is superb.

You’ve leaked various songs via the internet over recent months, is there a project in the pipeline?

Definitely, I have an as yet unnamed album coming out in time for summer and I’m planning to tour it as a live show featuring a few guest singers.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?

The traditional music industry is really struggling, but the new music industry is incredibly exciting. The internet has helped to create a much more level playing field for emerging artists. I’m so excited about what the future of music holds.

What do you think the future has in store for Mark Hill and fans of his work?

A lot of music! If my current mood prevails, I’m going to be making a lot of music in the future, especially now I have a new outlet for it. I really want to leave a legacy for my kids too, give them something to be proud of.

To those who haven’t heard your music (unbelievable as it may be), how would you describe your sound?

I always try and make each track sound a little different, but inevitably people seem to recognise it. I suppose a simple way of putting it is that it’s uplifting; soulful; feel good music with a bit of an edge. It’s always easier for someone else to describe it though.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the people reading this interview?

Elisha La’Verne Continues To Shine

It wasn’t that long ago that I interviewed this very talented lady for my site, time seems to have flown by since then, but if you somehow missed that amazing insight into this very talented lady, then you can read the interview via clicking here.

Well, now it seems that Elisha has unleashed her long awaited album, ‘361 Degrees’, on Japan and at present is sitting comfortably at number two on the Japanese iTunes charts, which is amazing in itself, especially for such a humble British artist. Now that Elisha is once again conquering Japan, the only next step is for her to conquer the rest of the world. She certainly has the gift to do just that!

After releasing 6 successful albums comprising of variety of projects and collaborations Marc Nelson and Fuzzy of Something For The People, also having the single “Elisha’s not at home” included on the soundtrack of the German film “St Pauli Nacht”, the hit song written by Elisha called “Change Your Way” being requested as a song for the Sony Playstation game “Persona Eternal Punishment” and performing a duet with Maxi Priest of the classic song originally performed by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack "Back Together Again" on Maxi Priest’s album “combination” - Elisha decided to take a short sabbatical from releasing material and became more involved in the various elements of the music scene but now would like to share her songs. After a long break from album releases in Japan, the last release being in 2001 Elisha signed a new deal with a Japanese label Star Base and went on to compile her 7th album.

Both Elisha her manager and A&R all had the view of keeping the album consistent with her previous album releases, having a fresh sounds with songs that everyone could relate to.

Having worked with T Town Productions (R Kelly) German based producers briefly on their production of ‘On Your Side’ a duet with singer Ehsan Elisha thought it would be great to work with them for her new album. 2B3 Productions (Beverly Knight, Destinys Child) a UK based production company have been friends with Elisha for many years since they both initially worked together on tracks from her first album ‘Her Name Is..’ At the time of signing Elisha and 2B3 were working on songs for her EP ‘10K Above’ and thought their song ‘Playing Hard To Get’ would be perfect for the new album. Ken Sato who is new to the production world and old friend of Elisha made his debut as a producer on ‘361 Degrees’ and Nephrite who is based in Japan produced the duets with label mates Matt Cab and Jamillions.

The album consists of songs written by Elisha and writers and artiste Sam Salter (Album: It's On Tonight), Sam Collier, Atozzio (Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson & Mario), Terence Reid and Jazz Buddafly.

The first single ‘Postcards’ taken from the album released on February 9th which held an impressive position of number 2 in the Japanese itunes charts. On March 2nd Elisha’s 7th album ‘361 Degrees’ was released with a debut position of number 8 in the itunes charts and is steadily creeping up the charts.

After news surfaced that a deal had been made regarding the lawsuit between Jill Scott and her former label Hidden Beach, it seems that Warner Bros released a statement announcing that they had indeed signed the incredibly talented Jill Scott. Jill Scott fans are rejoicing everywhere, I know I am. I swear I’m so hungry for the new project from Jill, there’s some serious withdrawels going on here. Haha!

Talent Obviously Runs In The Ambrosius Family

Now we all should know who Marsha Ambrosius is, I know I was a huge fan of Floetry when they were active within the music industry and was all geared up to see them on their UK tour, just before it was cancelled and announced they had parted ways. I was gutted!

Anyway, onto the subject of Marsha’s very own brother Marvin, who I have also been a huge fan of for what seems like forever, since he was in the group Kinettik anyway and ‘Soulasystem’ blessed our airwaves. I swear I spent the longest amount of time trying to track down that song numerous years ago, until I finally got my hands on a copy.

Now it seems that Marvin or Ambrosius as he is simply known is branching out on his own, with a new album out very soon and a freshly surfaced song he has very kindly blessed music fans with, we have another gem from the rather talented Ambrosius family to feast our lugholes around. Marvin has certainly not left me disappointed, in fact, he has even sampled one of my favourite songs from the 1990’s (Olive’s ‘You’re Not Alone’) on this gem. I grew up in the 1990’s and it’s a fact that the charts had some of the best R&B/Hip Hop music back then, nothing could touch the likes of En Vogue; Eternal (who were British); TLC; Aaliyah; Ginuwine; Missy Elliott; Timbaland; Bell Biv Devoe; Mary J. Blige; Boyz II Men and many others besides. Music these days just seems to be thrown together, which definitely isn’t my thing and more thought seemed to go into creating the best music back in the 1990’s. I’ve seen comments from many other people saying the exact same thing, that the 1990’s provided some of the best music in a variety of genres, not just R&B and Hip Hop.

Now I’ve been a huge fan of Shystie’s work for what seems like forever, she just knows how to keep you on your toes while delivering that hit song after hit song. But it still baffles me at how underrated this very talented lady is, especially considering the amount of pure quality songs Shystie has delivered to the masses. I could go on all day about the recognition this artist deserves, I could easily write an essay or two about what Shystie brings to the industry and how her previous label didn’t promote her work enough, but I shall let the music speak for itself.

The lady herself has unleashed a snippet of a new song, ‘Headbanger’, which is produced by the Fireworkz, who Shystie has worked with previously and I am left wanting to hear more, it really is that good. Bilal latest offering within music, ‘Airtight’s Revenge’, is easily one of the best albums within the past year for me, pure quality from beginning to finish and is exactly how music should sound, in my opinion anyway, which will no doubt differ from many other people out there who prefer a completely different sound within music.

I’m not going to go into too much detail on the following video, which Bilal premiered around a week or so ago, other than it seems to have a very psychedelic feel to it and definitely takes your imagination to a new dimension, if you can actually figure out what’s going on in the video. John Lennon Had That Special Gift

I am a huge John Lennon fan, not only because the man was a creative genius, but also because he was the breath of fresh air that the industry needed, nothing was ever too much trouble to him. He created music simply for the love of it and boy; he was good at it. Yes, he was around within music way before my time, but he definitely made a huge impact within my life, not only as a music lover, but as a writer, the man could turn his hand to anything, he had a God given gift that made people eat from the palm of his hands.

Even though John was before my time, he has made a huge imprint within my life and I often find myself listening to his music, while wondering what his music would sound like, if he was still with us. I always come to the same conclusion, it would be amazing, something that would stand the test of time and be around for years to come, pretty much like the music he created before he was so cruelly snatched away from his family; his fans; from the world of music. John Lennon is easily one of my heroes, along with Freddie Mercury, who was also taken far before his time. They just had that something special, that gift that you need within music in order to stand the test of time, so that their music would live long after they have passed.

I always stated that along with George Harrison, John Lennon was easily my favourite member of The Beatles, he was talented, but he had his own creative way of accomplishing his dreams, creating hits from some of the most quirky pieces of writing that music has ever seen and no matter how many people try to mirror themselves upon this man, there was and will always be only one John Lennon, a true genius who was taken far before his time. As well as an established poet, John was also a very talented artist and often created little pieces for his own solo work. Art was actually his first love, way before he took his work with The Beatles seriously; he actually studied for Art at the Liverpool Art Institute for three years, from 1957 until 1960.

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to the work of a very talented friend of mine, who adores The Beatles and John Lennon just as much as I do. Obenewa is a talented songstress from the UK who certainly has what it takes to be huge within the music scene; it’s just such a shame that this kind of music doesn’t take centre focus more often, especially when there’s talent like this floating around the industry.

Having released her official mixtape, ‘Therapy’, a while back, Obenewa is gearing up for the release of her new EP, which is coming up later this month. The Netherlands seem to be really churning some amazing music just lately and this proves it, we definitely need more of this taking centre focus within such a dry music industry, where getting your bits out seems to be the ‘norm’ these days. Whatever happened to talent alone selling records?

It still baffles me to this very day that Tha’ Rayne went virtually unrecognised within the music industry, despite boasting so much talent and churning out some pretty amazing material. Iman Williams is a talented individual who has been doing her own thing within music for quite some time now, last year providing easily one of the best albums of the year, quality music from beginning to finish.

I finally got a chance to interview the lady herself, who gave us an amazing insight into her work. Hopefully it will lead you to check out this talented artist’s work and her amazing album, which for me was one of the best releases of last year.

When were you first introduced to music?

I was first introduced to music when I was very little, maybe 4 years old little.

Did you ever want to do anything else when you were younger?

Actually, I was a natural born artist (I draw) and I always wanted to be and still do want to be a cartoonist.

Did you know back then that this is what you wanted to do?

I did! I started out playing piano around the age of 7 and I continued playing for about 3 years. I didn’t know at the time what type of music I was going to do but I knew I wanted to do it.

What approach do you take towards your music?

Well, as far as the creating process, I try to take current events in my life and incorporate that into the writing. I also like to go and reference music that I grew up listening to such as Chaka Khan; Mary Jane Girls; Aretha Franklin; ATCQ; D’Angelo; Lauryn Hill; Erykah Badu; etc. Once that’s done, it’s all up to the producer I decide to work with at the time to help that song come to life. It’s a frustrating process, but I love it.

What has been the response so far to your work?

So far, with ‘Stupid Human Trick’, people have given me so much love even if it isn’t one of excitement; they at least say ‘Good Work’. My fans and others who have doubted are seeing the potential and the hard work and that means more to me than anything else.

Do you have any plans to tour your music?

Absolutely! I am planning a mini UK tour which I hope to take off by August or September of this year. The last thing I want is to be trapped in snow in the UK during the winter. I think that because of my biggest fan base being in the UK, it’s necessary to start there first. It’s going to be the Stupid Human Trick tour. Hopefully BusCrates will be accompanying me since he knows the composition of the album better than anyone; he produced it.

Are there any artists within music that you would love to work with?

Yes! I want to work with Fatima and Funkineven; The Pharcyde; Roy Ayers; my family FSS: Futuristic Soul Society; Masta Ace; Herbie Hancock; DTMD; Georgia Anne Muldrow; Kaidi Tatham; Lady Alma; 4Hero and lots more!

What do you feel that the future holds for you, as an artist?

I think, since the release of my album and the re-release that I plan to drop this year, I think the future is VERY promising. You will see more collaboration from me and lot more changes within my music. I’m open to new sounds and I’m looking to get back to more instrumentation and less computerized sounds. Makes my head hurt thinking about how much music has scurried away from the jam sessions and musical side. We need that right now... especially the new generation.

In three words, how would you describe your sound to people who haven’t heard your music?

Intergalactic; Funk and Soul.

ORANGE TREE RECORDS HERE TO SUPPORT REAL TALENT

Isn’t it about time we had a label out there whose thoughts are solely with the artists they have signed? I for one think so, especially in a time when so many labels out there are pushing very talented artists to change who they are, in order to make them money. Well it seems that Orange Tree Records have been hearing fans of real music’s cries and launched a label (in December of 2010) and promotion service for talented artists who are screaming out for someone to support their gifts in music.

Here is a little information about the label itself:

Just so you know a bit about us, Orange Tree Records is a new record
label and music promotion service aimed at promoting original UK Soul and Hip Hop music and we launched on 6th December 2010 with the release of 'Fresh Fruit, Vol. 1', a compilation EP of some of the most talented underground Soul and Hip Hop acts in the UK. Tracks on the EP have already received support and airplay from DJs such as Giles Peterson, Shortie Blitz and Ras Kwame.

It all sounds rather interesting, don’t you think? Well there is more, as mentioned in the above statement from Orange Tree Records, they currently have an EP out on iTunes at the moment, which I might add is well worth checking out. Adele is an artist I truly admire in the music industry at the moment, not only because she can truly sing, but also because she always puts out the best material she knows she’s capable of. Her latest album, ‘21’, which looks set to take the number one spot in the album charts here this weekend is amazing and showcases why Adele is one of the best artists within the British music scene.

Well, anyone who knows me knows that I am not a Cheryl Cole fan, cannot stand her music whatsoever and I don’t rate her as an artist either. But today, Adele has done the impossible and made me rate a song that was originally done by the dreaded Cheryl, just mentioning her name gives me the shivers (lol). Adele turned such a forgettable Pop song into a Bluesy Soul number that you just wouldn’t associate to the original artist, you can judge for yourselves, here is Adele’s version below. Enjoy!

A few weeks ago, I introduced you to another amazing talent to come from the UK music scene, Baby Sol, who has been doing her own thing within music for quite some time now. Well, I finally got a chance to interview the lady herself, with an amazing insight into her work and how she started, where she plans to take her music, etc. It’s definitely a great read and hopefully will lead you to check out this talented artists work, which I have to add, is perfect. Enjoy!

When were you first introduced to music?

My parents were in a band together. I think I was introduced to it in the womb.

Did you ever want to do anything else when you were younger?

Yes! I wanted to be a doctor, just imagine! Then I wanted to be a journalist, I don't think I ever wanted to be a solo artist when I was little. When I hit 16 or so, I started thinking I might want to be a singer, but the idea has only recently set in that I might want to do my own thing. I'm on a journey!

Did you know back then that this is what you wanted to do?

No! I actually sort of fell into it because singing is something that I always did. A joy before it was a chore, you know? I love it. I love music.

What approach do you take towards your music?

It's very organic. I didn't sit and intend to write songs, they just happened over time, my form of expressing pent up emotions. But saying that, my approach is changing because I have changed, that is part of what my current work is about. This is ‘Before I Begin’, I haven't even started yet!

What has been the response so far to your work?

So far, I have had no negatives which is nice. It's very grass roots in the sense that no one outside of my network has really heard it yet, no the complete work at least. So yes, I would say the response has been good.

Do you have any plans to tour your music?

Well, to tour my music would mean to have a budget which I don't have. This is a completely independent project. Like I say, I see this as a pre-cursor to the me that is yet to come. A put to bed project or a sneak preview into me, the artist and songwriter, depending on how you look at it. I will be doing a series of gigs in London around the release, but after that I plan to go back to the day job until I get an offer worth going for.

Are there any artists within music that you would love to work with?

There are loads! But to be honest no, not enough to name them, cause you never know what will or won't work when it comes to creativity and I've already worked with some amazing artists! There are plenty of artists I would love to meet though, just to sit with them and absorb, to learn from them.

What do you feel that the future holds for you, as an artist?

I really don't know! I want to write songs and sing. As long as I get to do that and maintain a living, I will be very happy.

In three words, how would you describe your sound to people who haven’t heard your music?

Jazz; Reggae and Soul, I used to say Rock, but that part hasn't been seen yet.

Emily King Blessing Us With New Album?

Jennifer from Audio Diva highlighted the other week what I had been wondering to myself around a week or so before, as if she had been reading my mind, if Emily King who had one of the most amazing, yet underrated debut albums would finally bless us with a second album? As if by pure magic, Jennifer pointed me in the direction (well featured on her site, but same thing) of new songs which I had not heard of from Emily, leaving us both wondering if a new album is on the way sooner than we first thought.

Anyway, going by what I heard of the new songs, around four to be exact. The new album is shaping up pretty nicely and should definitely not leave us underwhelmed. It was almost a travesty how underrated Emily was with her first album; in fact I’m almost sure it was. It leaves me baffled how such talented artists are pushed aside for the more commercial friendly, yet disposable people within music.

I shall let the music speak for itself, if you haven’t already heard Emily King’s debut album ‘East Side Story’, then you have been missing out and I would certainly recommend it to fans of real music. Adele is an artist who has continuously satisfied my musical appetite for amazing music, especially as she seems to produce so much of it, like she’s some sort of magical being, which she probably is seeing as she has yet to give us one bad song. So with all of that said, I am definitely very excited for the new album, ‘21’, which hits UK music stores this coming Monday and will no doubt be number one album by next weekend, just like the single ‘Rolling In The Deep’, is looking to snatch the top spot in this weekend’s charts. Finally something decent will be at the top of the charts, if Adele continues selling her single the way she is now.

Now I know that for us in the UK the album is out next week, but spare a thought for fellow Adele fans who have to wait until next month to claim their copy of the masterpiece. Terri Walker Hits Industry Hard With New Song

Terri Walker pleased all of her fans, myself included, when she showcased elements of her upcoming album ‘Mz Walker’ the other day, which I documented here on this site.

After two weeks of fermenting over the news that the incredibly underrated Terri Walker is going to bless real music fans with a new album, the lady has kindly given us an exclusive listen of the very first single from the project, obviously with the help of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Ronnie Herel. Now going by what I and a fellow fan have heard, we have come to the conclusion that this song is hot and should definitely highlight Terri as one of the leading talents on the British music scene and with this being her fourth album, hardly any love within the industry and bags of underrated talent, Terri finally being recognised for the talent that she is can only be a good thing.

You can check out Terri’s new single below, which is only a radio rip from Ronnie Herel’s latest show, but it’s better than nothing. This single will hit the shops on February 22nd and the album will be out on May 3rd of this year, so ink of those dates on your calendars. Real music is coming!

Tweet Teases Us With New Project

There are talks that Tweet may finally bless us real music fans with a new album this year and I for one am more than ready for something new from the soulful lady, the lady herself has even said there will be an album this year, all being well.

"Ok this year I will be releasing LOVE, TWEET my 3rd album. No date yet ....still ironing out the business part of things!!!!"

I am officially excited. Tweet is one artist I always support; she knows how to tear the music industry apart with her sweet soulful vocals, which fans cannot get enough of.

‘Love, Tweet’ will be Tweet’s follow up album to the incredible ‘It’s Me Again’, which was released back in 2005. Now ‘Love, Tweet’ was originally penned in for a 2008 release, but because labels don’t want to support real music and politics surrounding the artist and album, the release date was put on hold. Now it seems that Tweet will finally bless us with this project, as soon as the business side of things is sorted out and boy, are we ready!

SugaSmak! are a duo you certainly need to keep your attention focused on, if only for my man Nate James, who is an artist I have adored since, wow, numerous years ago before his debut album dropped. He certainly knows how to keep me sweet when it comes to his music and I am never left disappointed, never, not once. So it baffles me that he is hardly known within the wider music industry, especially as he possesses so much talent.

SugaSmak! have not long since released their debut single, ‘We Are’, which is currently available on iTunes here in the UK and is well worth checking out. Anyway, I am definitely excited for the upcoming album from these guys (Nate ‘SugaJack’ James and Matt ‘Clyma’ Gooderson are behind the SugaSmak! project), I jumped up and down when I knew that Nate was doing this project a couple or so months ago. Definitely a project worth keeping your eyes on, these guys mean business.

I almost didn’t believe my eyes when I saw Jazmine posting this, I’m a huge fan of her music and it definitely caught me off guard. I know we have more than enough music to keep us sweet until she comes back to music and obviously we want to see one of our favourite artists continue in bringing the goods within music, but also, if Jazmine feels that she’s hitting a brick wall within her life, then of course she needs to take some time out. I hope she knows that when she does decide the time is right to bless her fan base and music with her talent, we will continue to show our support100%. Until then Jazmine, stay blessed.

Taking Us All By Surprise: Rumer

Rumer is an artist who definitely took me by surprise this year, I wasn’t aware of her before hearing the amazing ‘Slow’ on the radio and thinking amongst myself that it was some recently surfaced Karen Carpenter masterpiece, as they seemed to have that same tone to their voice and it seems that was a common misinterpretation while reading some of the comments from the video on Youtube.

I rushed out to buy Rumer’s debut album as soon as it practically hit the shelves in the music department of my local Asda supermarket, now I don’t usually buy any album off the back of one song, unless it’s an artist I truly respect and know that the music will be to the highest of quality. I haven’t looked back on this purchase, it turns out that this is easily one of my favourite albums from this year. Rumer is definitely an artist I will be playing on my iPod for a very long time to come, incredible talent, incredible album.

Moving on, it seems the artwork for Janelle’s project has surfaced online and it really is something special. I think I’ve mentioned before that I absolutely adore great artwork on albums, I feel it draws people in to checking an album out and it has done that for me in the past, intriguing me so much that I’ve purchased an album purely on interesting and colourful artwork. Janelle’s artwork is pretty special, but then she’s not an artist that does things lightly in music, she always has a reason for doing something and it always has a lot of thought behind it.

17 Years & Still Going Strong: Backstreet Boys

It’s no surprise that I am a huge Backstreet Boys fan; I’ve mentioned it on Twitter and on here a few times. I’ve been a huge fan of the guys for the past fifteen years, since they burst onto the UK music scene back in 1995 and ever since, I have been addicted to them and their music. A lot of people assume that the guys broke up and then got back together after numerous years apart, they seem to forget that the guys have been releasing albums over the past few years, which is a shame.

Needless to say, the guys are still going today after seventeen years together as part of the Backstreet Boys and fans could not be any happier. We wish the guys all of the success in the world and hope that they are around for the next seventeen or so years, as they continue to break records worldwide and continue with their record breaking sales as one of the biggest selling groups of all time. I will always make time for this group.

Green Tea is one of those artists who remains so underrated within music, yet consistently delivers music that could give the more well known artists a run for their money.

Everyone who knows me knows that I absolutely adore Ginuwine and that I have been a fan of him for many years, I just think he’s amazing, so when I heard a couple or so years back now that Tank; Ginuwine and Tyrese were to join forces and create the ultimate R&B supergroup, I was, as you can imagine, very excited. They are easily three of my favourite R&B males within music and you just knew that they were going to deliver something incredibly special.

When I heard there was never going to be a tour and that an album was never going to be released from them, I was quite disappointed as from what we heard via the leaked songs, it was all set to be one of the hottest R&B albums for a very long time. I still to this very day hold out hope that this album will somehow find its way to being released, I know all of the artists are on different labels and that’s an issue, but I hope that somehow an agreement can be made, in the interest of fellow TGT fans out there.

NEWS: The Plot Thickens With Jill Scott’s Label Issues

Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely adore Jill Scott’s music; she is one of my favourite artists within the industry and consistently delivers the very best in music. So to say I am excited for her upcoming album is an understatement; I am more than a little excited for the project.

With all of that said, I am a little worried about the label issues that Jill is currently facing with her previous label, Hidden Beach, who she has parted ways with. There seems to be a lot going on behind the scenes with this story and I hope and pray that it doesn’t delay the upcoming album; this is something all Soul fans need in their life.

Anyway, here is the latest piece of information to come from the battle between the talented star and her former label. I hope this somehow sorts itself out and it doesn’t postpone Jill’s upcoming project. I will continue to see how this story unfolds, as I say, I adore Jill and everything she does in music, acting, etc.

R&B singer Jill Scott is hitting back at Hidden Beach Records, claiming the indie label caused her millions of dollars in damages for mismanagement of her career, according to legal papers filed in Los Angeles Supreme Court.

Scott's cross-complaint claims breach of contract; tortious interference with contract; accounting; misappropriation of likeness; common law right of publicity; and false advertising under the Lanham Act.

The artist exited the label in October 2009 under the protection of California's seven-year rule, also known as Labor Code Section 2855 or the "De Havilland Law." Named after actress Olivia De Havilland's successful fight in the '40s against long-term studio deals, it provides that talent cannot be bound by personal services contracts, including recording contracts, for more than seven years.

In turn, the LA-based indie label - she recorded for Hidden Beach for 10 years - sued her in February, claiming she walked before fulfilling the terms of her deal. Hidden Beach has released six Jill Scott projects, including live CDs and a DVD, that have scanned 4.7 million units, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

"The allegations contained in Jill's cross-complaint are without merit and apparently meant to distract from what this lawsuit is really all about - Hidden Beach's right to recover damages based on her failure to fulfill her contractual obligations," wrote attorney Lawrence Hinkle, who represents Hidden Beach, in an e-mailed statement to Billboard. "We are truly saddened that Jill has taken this course of action especially since Hidden Beach's extraordinary support of her has been unwavering over the years in helping her achieve her dream of getting to where she is now in her career. Jill's allegations also run to counter to her own previous public and private acknowledgments concerning Hidden Beach and its effectiveness in supporting and advancing her career. Hidden Beach continues to hope that this dispute is resolved soon but until then, it will defend itself vigorously in court."

The artist is seeking compensatory damages, punitive and exemplary damages, an injunction against Hidden Beach from using her name and/or likeness without Scott's permission, and attorney's fees.

Always Pushing The Boundaries In Music: Kelis

I know I’m a little late posting this music video, especially as it’s been floating around on the internet for a while now. But it took me a while to actually see it and after doing so the other day, I just had to do a feature on Kelis. I have always respected Kelis for pushing the boundaries in music, she has released some really lovely music over the past numerous years and now with the new album, ‘Flesh Tone’, which is out here in the UK on May 17th and should definitely be worth checking out, you can purchase the album by clicking here.

It also seems that some people are mentioning she’s copying the style of Lady Gaga (who I can respect for her art, but I don’t listen to her music) with her latest music video for ‘Acapella’. Well for starters, Kelis has been around a heck of a lot longer and has always been pushing the boundaries with her style (although I don’t agree with her use of fur, but that is her choice and hers alone, no one else’s) and her music; she does not jack anyone else’s style. On another note, there were plenty of other artists around a long time before Lady Gaga who were just as daring with their style and music, for example: Grace Jones; Kylie Minogue; Kate Bush and many others.

Back When Good Music Was Evident: N-Tyce

I’ve mentioned this group previously, they were around in the 1990’s when music just seemed to be so much better, there was a mass of talented artists, groups, etc all battling for their piece of success and the majority of that which was put out was actually really good. N Tyce were incredibly underrated, they burst onto the scene around the time that the Spice Girls had taken over music and everything else they could lay their hands on, so it was always going to be difficult for them to earn a slice of success when a group was so popular, all eyes were focused on the Spice Girls and All Saints, who I think came onto the scene before N Tyce. It’s just a shame they weren’t as popular. R&B music in the 1990’s was really of a high quality and we had a lot of great talent that went unrecognised here in the UK.

I absolutely adore Akala, as a writer of poetry and lyrics myself I can truly appreciate his music. The man is a genius and talent obviously runs in the family, as his sister is none other than Ms Dynamite, who is just as talented as her younger brother. Maria Bentley is an artist you should definitely know of within music, bringing sounds both fresh and unique. I know I say this a lot, but it really does seem like a lot of music taking centre focus these days lacks that edge, that soul that the more underground artists seem to ooze.

Having started out writing her thoughts down onto paper, Maria’s love for sound and music grew, so much so that she penned and created music just for herself, a way for her to release tension and escape the pressures that surrounded her. Maria is currently writing and co-producing more material and plans to share it with as many people who love music just as much as she does.

Down Memory Lane: The 411

The 411 were a group I thought were pretty cool when they first came onto the music scene; they seemed to have that certain something most groups lacked within the charts, so it was refreshing to see a new group incorporating a mixture of sounds into their music. They received a great reception to begin with, but by the time they’d released a couple of more singles attention seemed to move from them onto other acts within the charts. Time passed by and one of the members left to pursue her own dreams and the group continued, well tried to, they hardly received the support they got the first time around and eventually parted ways. In my opinion, the first line up with Suzie (before she left) was the best.

It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Raheem DeVaughn, I could easily listen to his music all of the time. I’ve been a fan of his for what seems like such a long time and it’s been lovely too. Raheem certainly knows how to keep his fans on their toes when it comes to his music, especially when we saw him record an exclusive song a few weeks back. This man can really sing and I wouldn’t have it any other way, he’s just incredible!

Last year Syleena released her latest album, which was easily one of the best albums of the year for me and showcased to the world exactly how talented this artist truly is, the year before I interviewed the very talented lady and the interview was posted online for all to see just before her latest album dropped.

It is said that Syleena is currently working hard in the studio (working with Lil’ Mo, who is said to be working on her own project also) on what will be Chapter 5 in her album series and going by the albums she has previously released, we are in for a real treat. Syleena certainly knows how to deliver a great album, so there should be no worries on whether the upcoming project will match up to her amazing last album. It’s just a shame she continues to remain so underrated within music.

Memory Lane: Shola Ama

Shola Ama is an artist who burst onto the British music scene back in the middle of the 1990’s after being discovered whilst singing on the platform at a London tube station. One of her releases was a cover of ‘You Might Need Somebody’, taking the charts by storm and picking up many a fan along the way. At the tender age of eighteen years old Shola released her debut album, ‘Much Love’, which continue to highlight that she was a real talent within music and it was the success of her debut that gave Shola her a selection of awards, which included a Brit award and two MOBO awards. In 1999, she came back onto the music scene with her second album, ‘In Return’, which didn’t prove as much as a success as Shola’s debut, a great shame, especially as she is so talented. This delivered its own problems in Shola’s life as she went through a variety of her own struggles, which were widely reported and Shola eventually took a well needed break from recording. In 2002 she released ‘Supersonic’ and although it didn’t ride high in the charts here in the UK, Shola still continued to shine.

I’m not quite sure when a new album from Shola will surface, but when one does it’ll definitely be something well worth checking out, especially as Shola is so talented. She is also said to be mentoring her younger sister, Sadie. Who is currently working on her own music career.

I’ve been a huge fan of Leela James since I first heard her debut album, which I bought plainly because the album cover looked interesting. Before that, I hadn’t heard of her and I was not left regretting that impulse decision to buy something purely on the fact it looked interesting. I very much enjoyed Leela’s debut, which left me a fan of this artist and ever since I’ve been paying close attention to anything this artist releases, so the fact she has a new album out this year, I am very excited. It should be well worth checking out; Leela usually brings the goods within music.

Having been encouraged by her parents to pursue her obvious talent and love of music, she has done just that and it seems now it may just be her time to shine.

On The Rise: Amy Serrata

Amy Serrata is a name you should be familiar of upon this site, especially as I have interviewed the very talented previously, which you can view by clicking here.

Having nurtured her talent from a very young age, Amy has moved onto getting her work out there and so far she’s had a lot of positive feedback on her material, which is great. If you haven’t heard anything on this artist before, then here is a little introduction to the very talented, Amy Serrata.

Singer + Songwriter, Amy Serrata creates music intended to heal and bring people together. Amy’s interest in singing arose at an early age listening to the sounds of Nat King Cole; Ella Fitzgerald; Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong, to name a few. She sung in choir and started singing lessons at the age of 10 years old when she attended Nido De Aguilas, an international school in Santiago, Chile. As she got older she sung in several gospel choirs and through that experience continued to develop her vocal improvisational skills. Through college she studied Illustration with an emphasis in Fine Arts. During this time she took a break from singing, little did she know how much she would come to miss it. In 2006, Amy started singing with the Stanford University Gospel Choir. A couple years later a friend of hers encouraged her to create her own music. She let that thought simmer and shortly after began to improvise using poetry that she had previously written. The melodies started to naturally form and she then worked with producers: Hyp, HMD & Nyambezi, Willie Norwood to collaborate with for her first self titled album, ‘Amy Serrata’. Amy is currently focused on performing, working on her next album and writing songs for other artists.

Setting Standards: Raheem DeVaughn

This morning was pretty cool, mainly because I along with many other Raheem fans watched him record a new song and it was great getting an insight in the studio with one of music’s brightest stars. It definitely makes you appreciate all that goes into recording a project, as some of the most dedicated fans sat and watched via ustream for what felt like five hours. It was worth it, when we heard a peek of what could be the easily have been the finished product, without Raheem’s team have to tweak it to perfection. Terence Trent D’Arby’s amazing song, ‘Sign Your Name’, was the finished result and boy we were all sat on the edge of our seat wondering when we will get our hands on this beauty. It was well worth staying up extra late to watch Raheem do his magic in the studio.

Raheem is one of the artists within music today that I absolutely adore, he could sing the Yellow Pages and it’d sound amazing and soulful, he just has that certain something an artist needs to keep reeling people into his sound.

In the meantime, if you haven’t heard or purchased Raheem’s latest album, ‘The Love & War MasterPeace’, then you are certainly missing out. It has to be one of the best albums so far this year, along with a few others. I’ve always mentioned somewhere or another that I absolutely adore the music of Eternal, even back in the 1990’s when they were still doing their thing in music, so it baffles me why they were so underrated within the music industry, especially when they obviously had what it takes to be huge and delivered some of the best songs within their time in music. I’ve always thought that if any group were to get back together, create a new album and tour – then I would want it to be Eternal. When so many female R&B groups were coming from the USA, the UK had one group going for them in the form of Eternal.

If anyone is rocking originality, it has to be the amazingly talent Janelle Monáe, who is one of my favourite artists within music and has been for quite some time now. Her upcoming project is said to be dropping sometime soon and I am definitely very excited, especially as we have witnessed some rather amazing things from this rather unique and wonderfully gifted artist.

All eyes are definitely focused on the amazingly talented YahZarah, who very recently delivered the first single to be taken from her eagerly anticipated album, ‘The Ballad of Purple Saint James’, which by all accounts will be in stores on May 4th of this year, ink that date in on your calendars, as it will definitely be worth checking out if the first song from the incredibly gifted YahZarah is anything to go by.

The first single to be taken from the exciting upcoming project is aptly titled ‘Why Dontcha Call Me No More’ and definitely shows why people should be paying attention to this very talented lady, as she relays what her ex put her through within their relationship and how he broke her heart, not wishing him well after all that’s happened. This is an amazing song, I’m definitely looking forward to YahZarah’s upcoming project and if you like the sound of this song, you should be too.

High Hopes: Vivian Green

Most of the people who know me will know that I absolutely adore Vivian Green’s music and I have been a fan of her for numerous years. Since her last release – which was a few years ago now, I have been waiting with high hopes for something new from the very talented lady from Philadelphia, a place that also gave us the likes of Boyz II Men; Jill Scott; Kindred The Family Soul; Musiq Soulchild; etc. There definitely seems to be something in the water when it comes to Philadelphia delivering some of the most amazing talent in music, that’s for sure.

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of something new from Vivian, so when I heard there was an album to be released this year, April 6th, to be exact. I jumped for joy, I am definitely ready for something new from Vivian and with all we have heard so far, it definitely seems that we are in for a real treat. This year is shaping up pretty nicely so far for album releases.

Looking Great: Sade

Sade has been away from music for quite some time now and when she recently released her latest album, ‘Soldier Of Love’, fans of her work jumped for joy as it has been a very long wait since the project before the latest and they have not been left disappointed as Sade showcases exactly why she remains one of the best talents within music.

Sade definitely looks good for her age, as shown recently on the cover of Ebony, where Sade literally let her hair down and she looks very young indeed, a lot younger than her 51 years. Women get a lot of stick over how they look, so it’s nice to see a fellow woman showcasing that just because you are a certain age, it doesn’t mean you’re past it. Before anyone says, she’s been airbrushed, ok she may have slightly, but we all know that Sade oozes beauty both inside and out and you cannot airbrush that, so not much was really needed and that shows from this cover. Sade looks amazing.

I have been a fan of Vula for what seems like forever, so when I heard the newly surfaced song from one of her projects, DivaGeek, who I’m also a huge fan of, I was very excited. Vula just oozes that soul that music needs and she’s been doing her thing within the industry for numerous years now, so it’s about time her talent was finally recognised on this project, which sees her teaming up with the equally talent Ben Jones (who has worked with the likes of Nate James; etc).

I also heard there is more on the way, I’m definitely excited and if you like the following song, you should be too. There are some rather amazing things to come from Vula and DivaGeek. Enjoy!

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: Asia Bryant

Asia Bryant is an artist I introduced you guys to earlier this week and she has been very kind in letting me feature her further in an interview, exclusive to Sexy Never Left. So here we get to know a little more on the talent behind the amazingly catchy song, ‘Can’t Help It’.

As highlighted in the words from Asia’s biography introducing her talent, it states:

“Now, armed with this new single, a new look, a new direction, a new team, and a seemingly unlimited supply of fantastic new music, Asia is ready to conquer the charts and the world!!!”

They are not wrong, as ‘Can’t Help It’ has definitely propelled this amazingly down to earth and talented young lady into the musical world and now whether she is writing for other artists or her own music career, you just know that Asia Bryant will be a name you hear more of.

What can people who haven’t heard of you expect from your music?

You can expect to hear something fresh, airy, yet real and relatable. It’s a nice mix of catchy, sophisticated lyrics over production that embodies musical influences from all parts of the globe. It’s “a breath of fresh air”, at least that’s what I’m being told.

How did you get into music?

From what my parents told me, I’ve always been singing, since before I could talk. When I was younger, it was just a bunch of “goo-goo ga-ga’s” in a pretty melody. I wrote my first full song aged 8. It sucked, but that’s when it all started. I started doing competitions and full shows at age 9. The first time I sang the national anthem at a basketball game, I knew this was all I wanted to do.

The song you featured on your website for free download is said to have had a wonderful response from music listeners, how does that make you feel?

The response to “Can’t Help It” makes me feel very accomplished and proud. It’s a confirmation to me because I stuck to what I believe is great music, I was completely myself and people liked it. I’ve gotten responses about the song from people all over the world, telling me that it described exactly how they feel or felt in that moment. Others saying that it’s exactly the way they want to feel. It’s quite humbling.

What plans do you have for the future with your music?

I want to make colourless music for the world. I want to create music that everyone can relate to, music everyone can listen to and feel like, “yeah, this is good stuff”. So my plan is to just be me and make great music and hope that greatness will follow.

What approach do you take when writing material?

It’s very weird actually. I don’t have a set approach to writing. I can see a light flash in the studio and I’ll go off that. Sometimes I’ll write before I’ve even heard the track or as soon as I hear it. Sometimes I dislike a track one week and the next I love it. Generally speaking, it’s completely insane to not have a plan or format, but it works for me. Not having a plan keeps your mind open and ready for any situation. It keeps it fun.

What do you feel has been the response to your music as a whole?

As a whole, I think that people respect it. They sit down and listen to song after song and at the end say, “I’m truly a fan”. Even when I venture into various genres, people seem to appreciate it. It leaves me cloudy sometimes but I always go back and study more music, to make sure that I show appreciation and respect to those who’ve done it before me. I guess that’s why people say they respect it so much, because it pays homage but it’s still new, still real.
If you had the opportunity to tour, where would be your first tour destination?

I’d love to go anywhere overseas really. I love to experience different cultures and languages. I love to be inspired. Plus, I actually speak French; Portuguese; Japanese; a little bit of Spanish and German and I’m dying to get it out.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards artists of today?

Fortunately, I’ve been in my own little Asia bubble and the only time I really hear other artists is when someone is telling me they’re awesome, so I’ve been steered away from all the not so good stuff.

Sexy Never Left believes in bringing real talent forward and giving them a chance to shine. Do you think talent gets a fair deal in music today?

Not all the time. In my opinion, very few great talents actually slip through the cracks and make it mainstream. But, a lot of the real artists are underground and overlooked in my opinion. I wish sometimes it was more about the performance and not the politics. The only way you seem to get a fair deal is if you do all the work yourself, sell a few records and build your own fanbase, then they might give you the true opportunity that you deserve.

Did you ever want to do anything else when you were younger?

No. While everyone else wanted to be a princess; a ballerina or firefighters, I wanted to be a star, like one in the sky. I always associated stars in the sky to people who were on TV. Singers who got to perform In front of the world are something like the stars that get to shine on it. So funny enough, I wanted to literally be an actual star.

In ten years time, where do you hope to see yourself with your music?

In ten years, I just want to be successful. I’d like to have several very successful albums under my belt and my music touching and helping people everywhere. Hopefully, my success will allow me to help others who are less fortunate; sick or have the same dreams I once had without the outlets and opportunities to get it out there. I hope to have touched films; Broadway musicals and choral music. I have big dreams and in ten years, I have faith that I’ll have reached those goals and created new ones.

Are there any artists in the industry today you would love to work with?

I would love to work with Kings of Leon; Beyonce; Imogen Heap; Lady Gaga; Black Eyed Peas; Rascal Flatts; Drake; Sade; Orianthi; John Mayer; Corrine Bailey Rae; Jay-Z; Avril Lavigne; Pink; Taylor Swift; Justin Timberlake - I could go on and on. I’m inspired by so many.

What do you believe you bring to music that is different from many other artists?

I would have to say and I know this sounds cliché, a different sound; something that isn’t fabricated or just extremely out there. I think you can listen to it and relate with the feeling of it being new.

How do you feel your music is being accepted as a whole?

I think it’s being accepted pretty well. People seem to enjoy it, they wanna hear more and that’s all any artist can really ask for.

Is there anything you’d like to achieve which you haven’t already?

A Grammy would be great or a World Music Award for Best New Artist or Best New Album/Song would be nice too. I’d like to jumpstart the charity foundations I’m interested in. It’d be nice to have a platinum selling album and be able to perform in front of a stadium full of people. I have so much that I want to accomplish, so I’m just pacing myself, working hard and praying.

Underappreciated: Damage

For those who do not know who Damage were, well, they were a British R&B group who hit the music scene back in the 1990’s and proved that talent really does exist within British music, now they were very underrated as a group, so when they parted ways, it came as no surprise, although I did want them to continue and we were only blessed to have two albums from them. They are a group that parted ways and left many a fan wanting to hear more, it was surprising how underappreciated they actually were back then, when they were easily one of our best R&B groups at the time.

I’ve been a fan of this group for what seems like forever and last year saw them finally release their eagerly awaited debut album, ‘Routes To Riches’, which was definitely one of my favourite releases from last year. Well, this year saw the re-release of their amazing debut with a whole host of bonus songs on there and I wouldn’t usually purchase a re-release, unless it was from an artist I truly respect and Mamas Gun are definitely a group I adore within music, so it was well worth buying. It’s such a shame these guys aren’t known a lot more within music, although I do keep hearing their latest single on the radio up here, we need more music like this in the charts.

I grew up listening to a whole host of music, from the likes of John Lennon; The Beatles; Queen through to the likes of Peter Gabriel; Kate Bush; amongst many others. There was always something different playing in the background while I was growing up, some of it amazing, some of it not so good. I was introduced to many artists who were way before my time, some who didn’t leave much of an impression on me, others who did and Peter Gabriel was one of them, along with others I mentioned above. Peter always did something completely different in music, whether it was the catchy music he delivered or the amazingly creative videos throughout his career, you just knew you were in for a treat when something of his came on.

Michael Jackson Remakes? Quincy Jones Is Off His Trolley!

So it’s been reported that Quincy Jones is looking to re-hash one of the classics from the legendary Michael Jackson’s career, we’ve already seen a bunch of people butcher ‘We Are The World’ and now it seems they’re going to do exactly the same with another Michael classic and the first collaboration I heard of was none other than the annoying T-Pain and Robin Thicke (whose latest album is cack, yeah I said it) taking to the microphone on ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’. You just know that T-Pain will bring that awful Auto-Tune with him and destroy the song completely. You also know there’s going to probably be a million and one other silly names on the project who are big commercially in music, but offer nothing to the industry as a whole regarding talent and would never come close to what Michael is within music, a legend.

I do not know what Quincy is on, but he’s obviously on something if he thinks he can pull this off. No one can come anywhere near the original versions of what he has in mind, no one can touch the amazing Michael Jackson and Quincy should know that, especially as he’s worked with him and knew Michael for such a long time, right now he’s just disrespecting Michael’s memory and the many fans that Michael has in the world. News of this project has created a bit of a stink on Twitter and quite rightly so, with the recent butchering of ‘We Are The World’, it now looks like some of peoples favourite songs of Michael’s will be going down in history too, but for all of the wrong reasons.

I’m sick and tired of seeing all of these people and corporations who ‘supposedly’ knew and worked with Michael cashing in at his expense, claiming it’s somehow what he would have wanted. The fact is, no one knows what Michael would have wanted on this subject, but we know he would never disrespect his fans and just pray that his legacy lives on within his music, which it does. Quincy and all of those who are somehow involved in this project need to know that it’s not necessary to create dozens of remakes of classics within Michael’s discography, he is respected far too much. No one will ever come close to the original version. With all of that said; I will be sticking two fingers up to these remakes and blasting the originals loud and proud. Quincy can stick this idea; he’s off his trolley for even thinking it and showing disrespect to Michael’s memory.

Over The Years: Timbaland

Timbaland has always been one of my favourite producers, if not my favourite. He always delivered something incredibly different and creative within music and has worked with some of my favourite artists (Ginuwine; Tweet; Aaliyah; etc), but as I mentioned on Twitter the other week, his latest material doesn’t come anywhere near his older music, infact he’s lost certain elements that allowed him to stand out within music before. He doesn’t roll with the same clique in music that he used to (Missy Elliott; Tweet; Ginuwine; Aaliyah; Magoo; Playa; etc). Now I know that a couple of the mentioned artists are no longer with us (ie: Aaliyah and Static from Playa) and I know that losing Aaliyah affected Timbaland and his work deeply, he previously mentioned somewhere that he lost part of his muse, his creativity, when he lost one of his best friends and that has bound to have affected him in some way or another, but I find it quite sad that he’s now churning out music with anyone who’s anyone, when he used to appear quite selective on who he worked with in music and his beats just don’t sound the same, he’s changed a lot, which is quite understandable considering what he’s been through, I just miss his older material, the unique sound that Tim used to have within music.

I still adore Timbaland and there were a few bits and pieces he produced after Aaliyah was tragically taken from music, but over the past couple or so years we’ve seen him take a different route within music and I much prefer his older material. I hold out hope that he will one day prove me wrong and deliver something incredibly amazing and creative again, we know he has it.

Future Star: Asia Bryant

I was recently contacted by someone regarding the very talented upcoming star, Asia Bryant, who has all the qualities needed in order to be a star within music, writing for many other artists, alongside her own work in the industry as an upcoming solo act. Infact, Asia recently released her song ‘Can’t Help It’ via her official website for free download and apparently it has so far received a great response from a variety of music listeners, myself included, I’ve found myself wanting to listen to it over and over again, it’s just so incredibly catchy, this is an artist who seems to know how to churn out a great song and she was recently honoured for her hard work by ASCAP as one of the most exciting up and coming songwriters of 2010. It looks like Asia Bryant will be a name we’ll hear more of in the future.

The Wonderfully Talented: Jill Scott

I am very excited for the new Jill Scott album that is said to be surfacing this year, infact, I think it’s possible it will be all that I’m playing the week it finds its way into my hands. I think I have mentioned somewhere, whether it be on here or elsewhere, that I am a huge Jill Scott fan, I adore anything that woman does in music’ films; etc. She just oozes talent and has inspired me so much, especially as a writer. I was writing before she came onto the scene in music, but you probably get that I mean she helped me progress further as a writer of poetry, etc.

With all of that said, I don’t think I need to go into much when I mention that she recently premiered a new song of hers on the 41st Annual NACCP Image Awards, with a song that definitely made my day and left me wanting to hear more of this wonderful upcoming project. You just know that Jill will deliver the goods with this next album; she certainly knows how to produce amazing music and leave all of the commercial artists taking centre focus in the shade.

Sade has been around in music for a heck of a long time and is appreciated for the talent she is within music, it’s been a while since she last released something substantial in music, but this year saw the return of one of the UK’s best talents in music and needless to say, Sade was welcomed with open arms across the Atlantic in the USA, where they seem to adore her and quite rightly so.

I know I’m a little late posting this video, but as the site has been on a temporary break for a couple of weeks I guess I’m picking up on things that I haven’t yet posted on and this feature that Sade did on ‘The Wanda Sykes Show’ (who I think is absolutely hilarious), it’s definitely worth watching and will no doubt make you laugh, it’s hard to believe that Sade is over 50 years old, she looks great. Welcome back, Sade, you have been missed.
