Building Anticipation: Tawiah

I’ve been a fan of this artist for what seems like forever and her EP, ‘In Jodi’s Bedroom’, which was released a while ago is always in heavy rotation. I am eagerly awaiting Tawiah’s upcoming project, which by all accounts is due out sometime soon and no doubt many people are anxious to hear her new work too. Tawiah is a name that’s been doing the rounds for quite some time now, people definitely want to hear more from her and no doubt the upcoming album, which still does not appear to have a release date, will be welcomed with open arms. I definitely want to hear more music from this amazingly talented artist.

But until then, here are a couple of live performances Tawiah did recently of some new material which should definitely wet your appetite. Thanks to LVSXMusic.

Tawiah – Faces (Live)

Tawiah – Run (Live)

UK’s Finest: Nate James & Beverley Knight

I mentioned this on Twitter to Beverley Knight and Nate James themselves that a collaboration between the two in the studio would be a hot idea and it seems it would be just that. Having finally seen the live collaboration they did in London recently (on the internet), it seems it has wet many of the fans appetites to hear more from these two amazing British talents together. An in studio collaboration between the two would be very greatly appreciated by many fans, I feel. Also they are very much two of the artists here in the UK who are continuously delivering great music, even if it is to a limited following. Many a music fan knows who Nate James is and Beverley Knight is a little more well known than him, it would be great if their talent was appreciated on a more wider scale.

As previously mentioned, the two of them teamed up recently in London for a duet at a Nate James gig and the following performance is the result. A rather amazing collaboration on a classic George Michael and Aretha Franklin hit from way back. Although the quality for the following video is limited, it definitely gives you some idea of what a possible future collaboration might sound like and it’s exciting to say the least.

Nate James & Beverley Knight – I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) (Live)

Still Going Strong: Boyz II Men

Boyz II Men happen to be one of my favourite groups, if not my favourite. They always deliver the goods when it comes to great music and their vocals are always on point with harmonies, even now that they are a trio. I just think they are incredible and even though these days they tend to be slightly underrated, they still keep delivering amazing music. With that said, their new album is due out very soon and is apparently going to be called, ‘Love’. This album will definitely be worth checking out. Boyz II Men are always vocally on top of their game.

In the meantime, here are a couple of songs from the guys. One is an old song and the other is a new song from the upcoming project.

Boyz II Men – Lonely Heart

Boyz II Men – Open Arms

Alicia Keys Shows Her Funny Side

Alicia Keys has to be one of my favourite artists within music, not only is she incredibly talented, but she consistently delivers amazing album after amazing album. She just seems to ooze talent. Now with a new song that surfaced recently, Alicia is all set to do it again and release another amazing album, which is rumoured to be titled, ‘The Element Of Freedom’ and will be out at the beginning of December. This album will definitely be worth checking out.

But in the meantime, here’s a selection of adverts which Alicia did recently to add a bit of humour to the site, the last video proves to be a little surprise.

Alicia Keys & Rabbit - Hustler

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – Funny Bunny Business

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – True Confessions

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – Midnight Snack

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – Elevator Wars

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – Dressing Room

Alicia Keys – Superwoman

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – Rehearsal Hassle

Alicia Keys & Rabbit – The Big Reveal

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: LEVAR THOMAS

Having interviewed a few names within the past, it is now time for Sexy Never Left to interview the very talented, LeVar Thomas, who at the age of thirteen joined three of his cousins to form an all singing group. Pursuing a career with them ultimately helped LeVar come to the decision that this is what he wanted to do. They went on to win talent shows and gained recognition locally. After parting ways and having worked for a while, LeVar decided that his ambition was ultimately to become a singer/songwriter and it was then that he quit his job, taking his entire savings to move to Atlanta, where there were more opportunities for a hungry and ambitious artist like himself. It was from then that LeVar moved on to achieve all that has today.

Here is the interview with the man himself.

What can people who haven’t heard of you expect from your music?

The audience can expect an old school feeling with a new school sound. My music is mainly about love and relationships and goes beyond genre. I don’t really write to aim at any particular audience. I think anyone could enjoy listening to my music. Grandparents, all the way to teenagers and kids who just found puppy love. Haha!

How did you get into music?

I’ve been singing nearly my whole life. I am from a family of great singers and I started by singing at the age of 7 in my church choir. Around the age of 13, I joined a group with my cousins and we sang together for about 10 years but didn’t score a deal. We grew up and had to start working on our individual futures. It became harder for us to continue as a group, so we dissolved but we all still sing in some capacity.

What plans do you have for the future with your music?

As I always say, the sky is the limit. Whether I’m signed to a major label or continue on the indie route, I will always continue to make music. I hope to win some industry accolades for my music.

What approach do you take when writing material?

No particular approach. I work with producers whose beats I vibe with. If we’re collaborating on songs to show to major artists, I write something I could hear that artist singing. If the song is for me, I go with the feeling the beat gives me and I roll with it.

Do you have a favourite song that you have recorded? If so, what makes it stand out from the rest?

I’m fond of 'Ain’t So Bad'. It’s like a testimony song for me and the first complete song I wrote for myself. It’s about growing up with not a lot of material things and a dream. Now that I’m older and can get things I want, I long for the days when I only had to worry about school and being a kid.

What song of yours do you feel has had the best response from listeners so far?

Wow, that’s a good question! I get a great response from most of my songs but to date, the song that comes up most is 'Missing You'. A song I wrote about missing my loved ones at home, once I moved away. Fans of my music come by to tell me that they like my newer tunes, but 'Missing You' still holds deep meaning for them.

If you had the opportunity to tour with anyone of your choice, who would you like that to be?

There are lots of great artists out there I would like to tour with. An artist I’m really fond of and I think I could learn from is Erykah Badu. I’ve been to several of her concerts and it’s never the same twice. She has die hard fans who come to hear great music and get an experience they’ve never had before. Her stage presence is out of this world.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards artists of today?

I don’t blame artists at all for doing what they can to get out there. I do however feel that labels and radio could embrace more diversity and show love to a bigger group of artists. Playlists are for iPods and should not be used for radio.

Sexy Never Left believes in bringing real talent forward and giving them a chance to shine. Do you think talent gets a fair deal in music today?

There are some talented artists out there not getting their shine. I think the idea of what talent really is has been lost to finding sound-alikes and blank slate artists that could be molded into whomever the label wants. Again, I don’t blame the artists for trying to get ahead but there is too much copycatting going on, while real artists who can enrich music for the future are put out to pasture. If this continues, I’m afraid radio will go the way of dinosaurs... obsolete.

Did you ever want to do anything else when you were younger?

Not too many things aside from music. I attended college for a while to get into computer technology and once in kindergarten I think I wanted to be a fireman, but music has been what I’ve wanted to do since I was a young teenager.

Are there any artists in the industry today you would love to work with?

Most definitely, yes! I would love to work with some trendsetters like Beyonce; Usher; Anthony Hamilton and Erykah Badu - to name a few. You can see the dedication and time they put into their craft and we need that. Who will the kids look to for inspiration in the future without fresh and original acts like we were inspired by?

What do you believe you bring to music that is different from many other artists?

I think my sound is a throwback to old school balladeers like Luther, Stevie and Donny Hathaway with a new edge. As I said before, there is a lot of trend following and I dare to be unique and be myself.

How do you feel your music is being accepted?

The fans show me crazy love and I think that should be a defining factor of an artist. Not how much you can sound like the last radio hit. Lots of industry people have heard my music. Some say I need more edge, some can’t believe I’m not signed yet. So I’m not really sure. It’s been a mixed bag but at the end of the day, when the fans can say they love my songs, it’s all worth it.

Is there anything you’d like to achieve which you haven’t already?

I would like to be signed to a label that let me be me with a little more polish. I want to win some awards for my writing and be able to make a living from doing what I love to do; singing and songwriting.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to the people reading this interview?

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the interview. To my fans, thanks for the constant outpouring of support. For those just hearing about me, I hope they will visit my site and become a fan as well. To those with any dream or goal, be steadfast and work at it daily. To established artists, never forget what you set out to do when you first started.

Sexy Never Left would like to thank LeVar Thomas for taking the time to answer the questions that were put to him, as well as take part in this interview. LeVar is a very talented artist who is going very far within music right now. If you wish to find out more about LeVar and his music, you can do so by clicking here. Also, if you would like to talk to LeVar about his music, you can chat to him through his Twitter. You can also visit his MySpace or his official site for even more information about him.

In the meantime, here are some of LeVar’s songs for you to listen to and if you like what you hear, you can find out more by clicking here.

Cover Alert: Joy Jones

Now I have to be honest, the cover art for Joy Jones latest album ‘Godchild’ is pretty special. Not only is it incredibly eye-catching, but it also gives you a little insight into how individual this very talented artist is. As I have previously mentioned, cover art can definitely pull you into checking out an album you would never have necessarily checked out - without having some form of influence from an album song or better still, intriguing album artwork that draws the music lover in so much, they want to find out more on the artist or buy the album spontaneously because the cover has caught their imagination, they have instantly come to the conclusion that this album will be hot regardless.

Artwork that intrigues you so much you feel you’d like to get to know more about the artist and makes the album look more appealing, it basically highlights what role a cover can play in selling an album and that was definitely the case with the following album cover. Now, Joy Jones isn’t an artist to be missed out on and the album cover definitely gives you some idea into how special this album looks. I recommend this album to any music fan out there, this has deifnitely got to be one of the best albums released this year, along with a few others. If you wish to find out more from this inspirational artist, you can do so by clicking here.

But in the meantime, you can check out the amazing cover art for the album below.

Queen Of British Soul: Beverley Knight

As most of you will know who Beverley Knight is already, I don’t feel I have to introduce you to one of the UK’s best talents. Having not long since released her latest album, ‘100%’, which in my opinion is an incredible album and even though I have mentioned that I did adore ‘Music City Soul’, the latest is definitely very good and worth every penny spent on it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn’t yet purchased this album.

In the meantime, here is a recent performance which Beverley did here in the UK.

Beverley Knight – Beautiful Night (Live On Later... With Jools Holland)

Promising Future: Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona has not long since released her incredible debut album over here in the UK, an album that sadly was pushed back in the USA, which is a great shame. Anyway, for a while now I’ve been saying how good this artist is and a new video surfaces that showcases exactly how good this artist is. It just so happens that this is one of the best songs on the album for me. But overall, Melanie released a great album, an album that still is slightly underrated. There are bigger things to come from this artist, you can tell. Until then, her debut has to be one of the best albums this year.

In the meantime, here is her new video which should showcase more on this artist.

Melanie Fiona – It Kills Me

Incredible Performance: Dizzee Rascal

Having recently performed this song on British music show ‘Later... With Jools Holland’, Dizzee definitely showcased how good he is and the guitarist who was playing caught my attention too. I do like the guitar effects in this live interpretation. Also what made this performance just as good was the fact that Dizzee had the very talented Vula Malinga with him on this one, where she provided many of the backing vocals and jumped around the set excitedly. Vula definitely deserves her chance to shine and she did just that. Hopefully one day she can perform on the show in her own right, now that would be something.

Until then, here is the performance for you to take a look at.

Dizzee Rascal – Bonkers (Live On Later... With Jools Holland)

Cover Alert: Guy Sebastian

As Guy Sebastian is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album (his fifth in Australia), ‘Like It Like That’, which is all set to be released on October 23rd. There isn’t much longer to wait and the new album should definitely show to fans, both old and new, how amazingly talented Guy actually is and why he deserves so much more love within the industry.

His new album will definitely be worth checking out, but until then, I shall leave you with his rather amazing album cover.

The Definition Of Incredible: Jill Scott

Now, most people already know that I adore Jill Scott’s work; her music is usually on play wherever I go and I really do respect her as a writer. It could be down to the fact that I also am a writer, I write Poetry mainly and have been a fan of Jill for as long as I can remember. She’s one of those artists that consistently delivers amazing material, just when you thought her previous project was as good as it could get, she comes back with something that slaps you just as hard in the face. She seems to a very talented person in general, not content with having an amazing music career, Jill is also a dab hand in acting too, having starred in many a movie (including, Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married?’) and a hit TV series (‘The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency’). With that said, it has also been announced that Jill will be starring in an upcoming project, ‘Sins of the Mother’, which will apparently revolve around a student returning from her studies to face her alcoholic and abuse mother (who will be portrayed by Jill Scott), only to be confronted by a mother who is sober and has a three year old daughter in her new life. This production is said to be based upon the novel, ‘Orange Mint and Honey’, which was written by Carleen Brice. Jill is also all set to reprise her role within the sequel to ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ and is set to be titled, ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’, this will be worth checking out as the first movie was great. All of this from a woman who gave birth to her first child earlier this year. No doubt, she’s just as incredible in her new role as a first time mother.

All in all, Jill Scott is a talent not to be messed with.

AWOL: Tweet

Now Tweet happens to be one of my favourite artists and has been ever since she released her debut album, ‘Southern Hummingbird’, numerous years ago. Ever since then I have closely been watching anything and everything that this artist releases in music with eager anticipation, knowing that whatever comes from Tweet is always going to be the best of quality and worth every penny that is spent on it.

I have been waiting for her latest album, which was all set to be released a while back, but never actually materialised and left many a fan wondering why. But with that said, we know that the wait for new material from Tweet will be worth it and it seems so now, as she has teamed up with the very talented PJ Morton on his upcoming album, ‘Walk Alone’, which will be worth checking out. A big thanks to Concrete Loop for the heads up.

In the meantime, here is the song which PJ Morton has teamed up with Tweet on for you take a look at, you can also find out more on this upcoming project by clicking here.

PJ Morton – Love You More (feat. Tweet)

Talented: Georgia Anne Muldrow

Georgia Anne Muldrow is back with a new album soon, which will apparently consist of material she wrote back in her youth. The video for Gerogia’s new song, ‘Runaway’, is illustrated and definitely gives off the soulful vibe it’s supposed to. The video also seems to give off a nostalgic vibe about it, it could be the way it is illustrated. This is definitely the kind of music the industry needs to be focusing on.

Georgia Anne Muldrow – Runaway

She’s Not Done: Mary J. Blige

So another song from Mary’s upcoming project surfaced recently, having previously hitting us with two not so promising songs, Mary is back with a song that in all honesty is pretty hot and gives us a better insight into her upcoming project. It’s nice to finally see Mary doing what she does best, in this song. It definitely makes you interested in hearing more from her upcoming project.

Mary J. Blige – Said & Done

Memory Lane: Candy Flip

Candy Flip were a British band from Manchester and are possibly best remembered for their cover of a classic Beatles song, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. Now many Beatles songs have been covered numerous times and it is definitely very hard to find a good cover of a Beatles song, especially as they are one of the greatest groups in the history of British music.

With that said, a great cover of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ was released back in the early 1990’s by Candy Flip and even though it is nothing compared to the original, they definitely didn’t do a bad job of this song. It’s very hard to do a cover of a Beatles song without your version being compared to the original.

Anyway, here is their version for you to take a look at.

Candy Flip – Strawberry Fields Forever

22 Sep 2009

Underrated: Res

Res is a very underrated talent within music who released her debut album, ‘How I Do’, back in 2001 to a limited reception from the public; which was mainly down to her label barely promoting her and the wrong songs being chosen for singles. All in all though, Res’ debut album was amazing and should have definitely opened many a door for this very talented artist within the industry.

The story of labels not putting enough into an artist is very familiar and occurs even today with many very talented artists within music, which hardly seems fair based upon the fact there’s a whole hoard of very talented artists doing their thing within the industry with limited label support, who’re basically not willing to put their money into showcasing the talent that they signed.

Anyway, nowadays Res is working on Idle Warship, a group she is a part of along with the likes of Talib Kweli and Graph Nobel. Hopefully another album will come from Res herself, she delivered the goods with her debut, it would be great to see her back with another album.

In the meantime, here are a couple of songs from Res which should definitely give you a little more insight into this incredibly talented artist, if you don’t know of her already.

Res – How I Do

Res – Undercovers (Demo)

Future Stars: Idle Warship

For those who do not know, Idle Warship are a trio consisting of Talib Kweli; Res and Graph Nobel who have toured across Europe to many a sell out show. Now they are said to be working on their eagerly awaited debut album, which is rumoured to be titled, ‘Party Robot’.

During the past Idle Warship have released many songs on their Myspace, which has included ‘Industry Diary’; ‘Fall Back (feat. Chester French)’; amongst many others.

This is definitely a group to watch out for within music and we all know of the work each have done in their own right, especially Res and Talib Kweli. So no doubt their upcoming album will be something special to watch out for within music, they’re certainly picking up quite a following.

Here is a song of theirs which should give you a little insight into what to expect when their debut album is released.

Idle Warship – Say You Will

21 Sep 2009

Underrated: Glenn Lewis

It’s definitely been a while since we saw anything released from Glenn Lewis, his debut album, ‘World Outside My Window’, was certainly very underrated when it was released back in 2002 and would be an album I’d recommend checking out, if you haven’t already.

Glenn is another artist within music who has fallen victim to the perils of being signed to a major label and despite having plenty of talent to deliver amazing album after amazing album, he still has yet to release a follow up to his incredible debut album and he has been all set to do so on two separate occasions, but unfortunately both were pushed back and never saw the light of day, which is a great shame. Hopefully another album can come from this very talented artist sometime in the future.

Here is a music video of a song taken from Glenn’s debut album.

Glenn Lewis – It’s Not Fair

Thoughts: Worst Albums Of This Decade

I know this is only a certain minorities opinion, but the fact that one of the best albums of the past ten years in the UK (Craig David’s ‘Born To Do It’) was in the list for ’50 Worst Albums Of The 2000’s’ was in the list, it kind of raised the question what should be in this list? There are certainly a lot of candidates for the worst album’s category.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not a fan of what Craig is putting out in music at the moment and I really didn’t rate his last album. But no one can ever say that ‘Born To Do It’ was a bad album, when it practically paved the way over recent years for many artists and definitely made a star of Craig. His debut album set a standard within music.

I do definitely agree with the majority of albums in the list, but there would certainly be some other names added to it and certainly names of albums that were most definitely overhyped at the time, whether they’re recent or within the ten year timeline allowed. I do agree with the latest album from Queen being in the list especially, no one could ever replace Freddie Mercury. Freddie was and always will be a legend within music and no amount of new albums could ever replace someone who, in my opinion, is irreplaceable within the group. But, I do agree on the entry of Black Eyed Pea’s latest album. I know it has been hugely successful within the charts recently, but, I don’t think the group are as good as they used to be numerous years ago. The best example was when they released their earliest work and one of their best songs, in my opinion, is the collaboration they did with Macy Gray, ‘Request Line’. Now they seem to be more commercialised.

If you wish to take a look at the list that was compiled, you can do so by clicking here.

So the question is; if you could compile your own list of some of the worst albums over the past ten years, what would they be?

18 Sep 2009

The Ultimate Soul Group: TDK

First of all, I would like to thank Jennifer for the heads up on this story. I've been out of the loop a little lately and this definitely made my ears prop up a little, because I am a fan of a certain Kelly Price. Well, it seems that Kelly is teaming up with none other than Tamia and Deborah Cox to form the ultimate Soul group, TDK. These have to be three names within music that always deliver great music and now with the knowledge that they are working together on one big project titled, 'The Queen Project', which in itself sounds very exciting. You just know that this will be something special.

If you wish to find out more on this project, you can do so by clicking here.

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: SZJERDENE

Having previously interviewed many people over the past year and half, including Natalie Brown, Syleena Johnson and Mamas Gun. It is now time to interview an upcoming talent from over here in the UK; as Sexy Never Left introduces you to the very talented Szjerdene.

Szjerdene is currently said to be working on her upcoming EP, which will apparently be titled, ‘Tailored’, which she states will be a fusion of sounds both old and new. Having shown her talent at a very young age, when reaching the age of seventeen, she had already penned over twenty songs and performed upon some of London’s leading venues and now after brief stints in other lines of work, she is concentrating solely on her writing and building upon a fanbase that will no doubt grow in the near future. This is certainly an artist you need to keep your attention on.

What can people who haven’t heard of you expect from your music?

All that has been, all that is and all that is yet to come.

How did you get into music?

I started playing French Horn from the age of ten and realised I loved Classical music and harmony. After joining and quitting many a choir, I decided being a soloist was pretty much what I wanted. I started out singing hooks on Garage songs (not many people know this), but soon realised my attention fell on many genres and began writing for particular styles.

What are your feelings towards your work?

I’m so excited about my future. People ask: What are you doing? When is the EP out? The truth is, I thought that it would be ready by now and sometimes looking around at UK artists, I’m privelaged to know some artists (such as Shakka Phillips; Bluey Robinson and Kase). I sometimes feel that I should have had music released by now, but I know that it’s worth the wait because as I’m writing, it feels right. Cheesy I know, but stick with me.

Who or what influences your music?

Many artists, right now Little Dragon are very inspiring, they’re making music they like and I think it is important for an artist to be happy with their creations.

How have your experiences affected your music?

My music is about my life. There’s not much separation going on there, whether good or bad it’s all mixed in.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards artists of today?

I love the D.I.Y. attitude and that the essence of live music is as important as the recorded product. Also, the audience and supporters are really on your side if they like what they hear, it’s then up to you to keep them talking.

Are there are plans on releasing your music?

Definitely.

Sexy Never Left believes n bringing real talent forward and giving them a chance to shine. Do you think talent gets a fair deal in music today?

The internet is at everyone’s fingers, I think the playing field is just about levelling out. If you know you can do it, then it’s up to you to do the grafting and get your name heard.

What do you believe you bring to music that’s different from other artists?

I don’t know if I’ve ever thought about this for too long. I’m just me and I guess no one else can be that.

If you could collaborate with anyone in music, who would you choose?

Hmmmm... I’d love to write with John Legend. Wow, that got me excited.

If you could re-live one moment so far that you’ve been completely happy with, what would it be?

This whole year, so many things to choose from, I actually couldn’t.

Where would you like to be in ten years time with your career?

Singer/songwriter/composer and on my 70th album (I joke). Just happy, I guess – to have lasted that long commercially anyway.

Are there any artists out there that you model yourself on?

I never model. I’m influenced, but don’t ever try to be like anyone else. Similarities may occur, but never on purpose. I’m happy finding out who I am slowly.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to the people reading this interview?

If all else fails, smile.

I would like to thank Szjerdene for taking the time to chat to Sexy Never Left and take part in this interview. If you would like to find out more on this very talented artist, you can do so by clicking
here.

A Talent Who Is Finally Shining: Nneka

Nneka is a singer/songwriter born in Nigeria, who in her late teens relocated to Germany to pursue her dreams of singing. Since moving to Germany, Nneka has been doing her own thing within music taking influence from her younger days back home in Nigeria and picking up on new experiences she’s since had in Germany.

Upon finishing her debut EP, ‘The Uncomfortable Truth’, Nneka toured Europe performing alongside the likes of Gnarls Barkley, Sean Paul and many others.

I would seriously recommend checking out this artist, having just recently scored a hit in the UK, with the song ‘Heartbeat’, she is definitely someone to your attention focused on, as her material promises to take you on a journey of sounds influenced from her Nigerian roots, right through to her influences since moving into Europe. Both of her albums, ‘Victim Of Truth’ and ‘No Longer At Ease’, are definitely recommended.

In the meantime, here is Nneka’s latest song which has proved to be a bit of a hit over here in the UK. This should definitely give you a little more insight into this very talented artist.

Nneka – Heartbeat

Sprinkling Her Magic: Janet Jackson

After a great tribute to her brother Michael at last night’s MTV VMA’s and hyping everyone up with an appearance on stage. Since her amazing tribute to Michael, who is incredibly missed already (it seems like only yesterday he was taken), Janet has unleashed a song on her fanbase and an amazing song it is too. A song that definitely gives you an insight what to expect with the upcoming project that is said to be in the pipeline. Janet certainly knows how to deliver music and certainly knows how to get everyone excited, as we saw during last night’s MTV VMA’s when Janet took to the stage with an amazing and lasting tribute to her brother.

Here is the new song that surfaced during the early hours that has fans getting very excited.

Janet Jackson – Make Me

We Miss You, Michael

After what still feels like only yesterday that the legendary Michael Jackson was taken from the world, last night in the USA saw one of the best tributes to the King of Pop at the MTV VMA’s with Michael’s sister, Janet, taking to the stage with a fantastic performance and a lasting tribute to her incredible brother. It’s a shame that a certain someone (many will know who I’m talking of) tried to take the limelight away from what the show should have been focused on. Michael, we will always miss you.

Here is the performance that Janet gave to pay tribute to Michael, followed by the full trailer for the concert movie that is coming to cinemas soon.

Raining Gloves: Michael Jackson

So the MTV VMA’s are doing a Michael Jackson tribute very soon and going by what has been said in promo, it’s supposedly going to be a tribute like no other. I hope so. I really hope that they do Michael Jackson justice and pay a decent tribute to one of the finest talents to have ever graced this planet.

I do think it’s such a lovely promo; it definitely brings a tear to your eye. I’m not going to say much on the following video, because just by seeing it, you should get some reaction from it. You can watch the promo video below.

Future Star: Green Tea

You’re probably thinking, hold up, isn’t that a drink or something? Well you’d be half right, because it is, but Green Tea also happens to be a very talented and hugely underrated artist within music. Hailing from Washington DC and with two amazing albums under her belt, this artist certainly seems to be making a name for herself within music and we definitely need more artists like this. With so much predictable material being churned out by many an artist in today’s industry, it’s nice to see another artist who is moving away from what’s hot in the charts and sticking to her soulful roots. This is definitely someone to keep your attention focused on.

If you wish to purchase this artists music, you can do so by clicking here.
Also, a big thankyou to SoulUK who introduced this artist to me.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of music videos which should definitely give you a little more insight into how amazingly talented this artist is.

Green Tea – Sweet Georgia Brown

Green Tea – Crazy Feelin’

Future Star: Vula

British singer/songwriter Vula Malinga has been creating a name for herself within music for quite some time now. Having already featured on many songs, including working with the incredible Basement Jaxx. Vula has recently made a bit of a name for herself by taking part on SoulCulture’s Aaliyah tribute compilation, delivering what was an incredible interpretation of an Aaliyah classic. I’ve been a fan of this artist for a long time; her long awaited album is definitely very much anticipated. If you wish to hear more on this artist or find out more information, you can do so by clicking here. Vula’s incredible ‘If You Want It EP’ is out now and available from the likes of 7digital and iTunes.

The following performance is an original composition that Vula, LaDonna and Sharlene have took part in a number of times at live shows and as well as being a laugh for the people who attend the shows, showcases just how on point their vocals are. You can check it out below, followed by a live performance of ‘Red Alert’. This is an artist everyone should know of, she’s incredibly talented and deserves so much more success.

She’s Back & She Means Business: Jaguar Wright

It’s been a while now since Jaguar Wright released anything, her last album ‘Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul’ was amazing and definitely showcased this artist as someone to take more seriously within music. After what feels like forever since Jaguar last blessed us with her amazing talent, she’s back with a fresh new slice of Soul music that leaves you wanting more and no doubt, more will be coming from this fantastic artist very soon with a rumoured EP and album in the pipeline, I’m definitely excited.

Below is Jaguar’s new song for you to listen to.

Jaguar Wright – Beautiful

Amazing: Maxwell

Having released one of the best albums this year, Maxwell continues to showcase just how incredible a performer he is, as he has his many female fans eating out the palm of his hand. I’m not going to say much in this post, the video posted below should speak for itself.

Maxwell – Bad Habits (Live On Jimmy Kimmel)

Incredible: Men Of Standard

Men Of Standard are an American Gospel group who have been recording together for well over ten years, spending most of that time signed to the label, Muscle Shoals. Returning in 2005 with a fresh attitude to music and their new home in the form of label, Columbia, the group returned with their latest offering, ‘Surrounded’. It was this album that saw the group work with the likes of Kirk Franklin, Warryn Campbell, etc. They also featured on the second leg of Kirk Franklin’s ‘Hero’ tour.

If you haven’t heard their music already, you have definitely been missing out on some great Gospel music. I would seriously recommend checking out their work, especially their latest album, ‘Surrounded’, which was out back in 2005.

For those who haven’t heard of this group, here are a couple of their songs for you to check out, which should give you a little more insight into how amazing they actually are.

INTERVIEW SPECIAL: NATALIE BROWN

It was well over a year ago that I began the interview special feature and since then, I have interviewed a few amazing artists, including Syleena Johnson; Shystie; Mamas Gun; etc. Well now is the turn of the incredible Natalie Brown. Here is a bit of information about the lady herself, followed by the interview exclusive to Sexy Never Left.

Canadian singer/songwriter Natalie Brown’s involvement in music was nurtured from a very young age, with work in Theatre, Gospel music, creative writing, etc. Having decided on pursuing her music career, Natalie moved to California where she was selected to perform with Gospel recording artist, Ron Kenoly, on his ‘Welcome Home’ tour in 1996. Upon returning from a once in a lifetime opportunity, Natalie then went on to work with Seth Riggs and Dave Stroud.

The year 2000 saw Natalie release her debut album, ‘Let The Candle Burn’, which was welcomed with open arms by fans and many a person involved within the music industry. Natalie returned to the studio not long afterwards to record what was to be her 2003 album, ‘A Cool Christmas’, a ten song collection of R&B/Pop flavoured Christmas songs.

In 2004, the digital singles ‘I Wonder’ and ‘Queen of Me’ were made publicly available on Natalie’s official website. The songs created a buzz within music and received a large amount of attention and later on the same year, ‘Queen of Me’ was released on the ‘Soul Essentials 7’ series with songs from the likes of Rahsaan Patterson; etc. A great achievement for all involved.

To the delight of fans, Natalie went on to release her eagerly awaited new material and in January of this year, Natalie’s long awaited album, ‘Random Thoughts’, was officially released and contained songs on a variety of themes. It is now that she is finally beginning to make a name for herself within the music scene, often doing her own promotion online on services such as Twitter, etc.

You can find out more on this very talented artist by visiting her official website.

What can people who haven’t heard of you expect from your music?

They can expect a voice that is clean, soothing and soulful. They can expect lyrics that speak of our relationship to others, this world and they can expect different themes within my music. They can expect music that, while it doesn’t sound like a “hit” record, it is written to stand the test of time.

How did you get into music?

I have been singing ever since I was a little kid. I was in community, school and church choirs as well as musical theatre and eventually this led to me wanting to pursue a lifetime career in music. I was in the Gospel field for a while, and then I became a secular artist and have been pursuing the path of an independent artist enjoying a colourful journey so far.

What are your feelings towards your work?

Like real life, it is a work in progress. I love what I do and I try to do the best job of it that I can each time I write or perform. I feel like what I am doing is taking my perspective on life and turning it into words and song that I hope people can relate to and find emotion in to apply to their own lives.

How have your experiences affected your music?

Everything that I see, do, and experience affects the music that comes out of me. My music is a product of both my experiences and imagination.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards artists of today?

Major label artists are more in the branding business than the artist business, so their art must reflect (for better or worse) the direction in which their corporate label owners and partners are headed each quarter. The artists that are naturally well-suited to that direction sound great; while the others sound forced. As for the Independent music scene, I think that there is a lot of incredible hidden talent out there. Not all of it is brought to the mainstream’s attention, but there is certainly no lack of great artistry. I am thankful for the internet which allows us to search for and discover great artists that we may not be able to hear on the radio, read about in publications or see on TV.

Are there any plans on touring internationally?

We have some top-secret stuff in the works which we will reveal at the appropriate time. Anyone who is interested in getting tour information should sign up to my mailing list at my site to stay in the loop.

Sexy Never Left believes in bringing real talent forward and giving them a chance to shine. Do you think talent gets a fair deal in music today?

I think that with the commercialisation of art at the major label level there has been a super focus on quarterly earnings and stock prices over artist development. If an artist at the major label level is both talented and commercial, then a good match is achieved and everybody wins. But mere talent alone, both at the major label and the independent label level, doesn’t seem to be enough to allow an artist to shine. It’s what I call the “talent+ model” – you must be talented plus have something else. For example, venues don’t book artists just because they are just ‘talented’. Instead, artists have to also have enough of a following for the venue to justify the booking. The same thing applies across the board, and there isn’t enough space to elaborate on all the different areas where talent fails to get a fair deal in music today. Do you think Al Green; Aretha Franklin; or Mick Jagger would be signed today just on talent alone, or would they be rejected because of a lack of sex appeal or commercial branding capability? At the major label level, artists that can be branded will do well. At the independent level, talented artists should be able to persevere in the long run, if more resources are available to spotlight them in large enough numbers to create momentum.

Has this always been your choice of career?

I wanted to be an actress when I was younger. But then I changed my mind in my teens and realized that people reacted to my singing voice in a very interesting way. I still have aspirations to act, but I realize I can make a difference right now with my voice and I absolutely love what I do.

What do you believe you bring to music that’s different from other artists?

I bring myself. I know that might sound funny, but there is only one me and I have a unique perspective that I can share via my vocal and writing abilities. I think that as artists, we are all influenced by what came before us, but each person is a unique fingerprint and therefore our interpretation of things through our gifting is what makes us different.

If you could collaborate with any one person in music, who would you choose?

This is an incredibly difficult question to answer as there are so many artists I’d like to work with. But at this very second it would be Chrisette Michele. I absolutely adore her voice and think that the combo of her grit and my smooth vocal could be very interesting. She is an amazingly talented writer and I’d love to learn from her through a collaborative effort. From my interaction with her online, she seems to have a heart of gold and I’d like to find out more about her heart through working with her.

If you could re-live one moment so far that you've been completely happy with, what would it be?

Wow, interesting question! I don’t really know. I don’t think re-living a past moment would satisfy me. I don’t believe in basking in old moments, I really believe in making new, happy ones.

Is there anything that you'd like to achieve that you haven't already?

I’d love to tour the world. I’d love to be able to use the platform I am creating for myself to speak to people and encourage them to live their dreams. I’d just like to take what I am doing now to a bigger platform, do it on a larger scale.

Are there any artists out there that you model yourself on?

I have been influenced by hundreds of artists over the years. I can’t really pick one artist that I can say I wanted to emulate. I’m always partaking in art and music and if there is something valuable, I may incorporate it into what I do.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to the people reading this interview?

I would really like to encourage people to support all kinds of Indie art. There is a wealth of talent that blogs and ‘zines such as this one are aiming to expose and that is awesome. It really helps when you find an artist you enjoy to go to a show; buy a CD; invest in a painting; go to see a live play. Many of these artists would not be able to do this if it were not for those supporting their craft. So thank you in advance for supporting anything Independent.

I would like to thank Natalie Brown for taking the time to chat to Sexy Never Left and take part in this interview, for anyone who knows this artist online, you will know that she is very down to earth and always takes time to interact with her fanbase, something you don’t see a lot of within music nowadays. Such a lovely person, as well as being a very talented artist.

Natalie has also allowed me to feature one of her songs with the amazing interview I featured above, please check out the song I have posted below, which is available for you to listen to and if you wish to find out more on this very talented artist, you can do so by clicking here.

Unbelievable Talent: Corneille

Corneille is a singer/songwriter who was born in Germany to Rwandan parents, although he does hold a Canadian passport. He is an artist who sings both in French and English, influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder; Prince; Marvin Gaye; etc. Discovering his passion for music around the time of 1993, Corneille went on to join an R&B group, who won the Découverte 1993 competition and it was this that introduced him to songwriting.

In 1997, Corneille left his familiar surroundings to pursue his studies in Canada and it was during this time that he founded O.N.E. – an R&B group, with Pierre Gage and Martin Gardy. These were people he had met not long after arriving in Canada. At the beginning of 2001, Corneille left the group to pursue his solo interests and it is from here that his music began to take off.

In 2007, Corneille released his first English album, ‘The Birth Of Corneilius’ and it is this album that really showcases this artist as someone to watch out for within music. If there’s an album you should check out within music, this is it.

Here is a song of his for you to check out, which should give you more of an insight into this amazing talent.
