INTERVIEW SPECIAL: SZJERDENE

Having previously interviewed many people over the past year and half, including Natalie Brown, Syleena Johnson and Mamas Gun. It is now time to interview an upcoming talent from over here in the UK; as Sexy Never Left introduces you to the very talented Szjerdene.

Szjerdene is currently said to be working on her upcoming EP, which will apparently be titled, ‘Tailored’, which she states will be a fusion of sounds both old and new. Having shown her talent at a very young age, when reaching the age of seventeen, she had already penned over twenty songs and performed upon some of London’s leading venues and now after brief stints in other lines of work, she is concentrating solely on her writing and building upon a fanbase that will no doubt grow in the near future. This is certainly an artist you need to keep your attention on.

What can people who haven’t heard of you expect from your music?

All that has been, all that is and all that is yet to come.

How did you get into music?

I started playing French Horn from the age of ten and realised I loved Classical music and harmony. After joining and quitting many a choir, I decided being a soloist was pretty much what I wanted. I started out singing hooks on Garage songs (not many people know this), but soon realised my attention fell on many genres and began writing for particular styles.

What are your feelings towards your work?

I’m so excited about my future. People ask: What are you doing? When is the EP out? The truth is, I thought that it would be ready by now and sometimes looking around at UK artists, I’m privelaged to know some artists (such as Shakka Phillips; Bluey Robinson and Kase). I sometimes feel that I should have had music released by now, but I know that it’s worth the wait because as I’m writing, it feels right. Cheesy I know, but stick with me.

Who or what influences your music?

Many artists, right now Little Dragon are very inspiring, they’re making music they like and I think it is important for an artist to be happy with their creations.

How have your experiences affected your music?

My music is about my life. There’s not much separation going on there, whether good or bad it’s all mixed in.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards artists of today?

I love the D.I.Y. attitude and that the essence of live music is as important as the recorded product. Also, the audience and supporters are really on your side if they like what they hear, it’s then up to you to keep them talking.

Are there are plans on releasing your music?

Definitely.

Sexy Never Left believes n bringing real talent forward and giving them a chance to shine. Do you think talent gets a fair deal in music today?

The internet is at everyone’s fingers, I think the playing field is just about levelling out. If you know you can do it, then it’s up to you to do the grafting and get your name heard.

What do you believe you bring to music that’s different from other artists?

I don’t know if I’ve ever thought about this for too long. I’m just me and I guess no one else can be that.

If you could collaborate with anyone in music, who would you choose?

Hmmmm... I’d love to write with John Legend. Wow, that got me excited.

If you could re-live one moment so far that you’ve been completely happy with, what would it be?

This whole year, so many things to choose from, I actually couldn’t.

Where would you like to be in ten years time with your career?

Singer/songwriter/composer and on my 70th album (I joke). Just happy, I guess – to have lasted that long commercially anyway.

Are there any artists out there that you model yourself on?

I never model. I’m influenced, but don’t ever try to be like anyone else. Similarities may occur, but never on purpose. I’m happy finding out who I am slowly.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to the people reading this interview?

If all else fails, smile.

I would like to thank Szjerdene for taking the time to chat to Sexy Never Left and take part in this interview. If you would like to find out more on this very talented artist, you can do so by clicking
